The Composer

Kari Beate Tandberg (b. 1958) is trained as a composer and pianist from the Norwegian Academy of Music. She presented her PhD through the National Norwegian Artistic Research Programme (2007). As a composer and research fellow, she has focused on how visual impressions and impulses can form the basis for a sonorous, musical expression. Her compositions have been performed by The Norwegian Radio Symphony Orchestra, The Norwegian Chamber Orchestra, The Norwegian Wind Ensemble, Ensemble Ernst, Cikada String Quartet and Nordic Voices among others. Her works have been presented in Japan, Germany, Scandinavia and broadcasted by Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation (NRK).

Kari Beate Tandberg has received numerous grants, including the Norwegian Government Grant for composers (Art Council Norway). In 1995 she received 1st prize in the international Fanny Mendelssohn competition. She has been represented in Nordic Music Days (NMD), Young Nordic Music (UNM) and the European Contemporary Composers Orchestra (ECCO). Her album “Modes and Moves” was released in 2016.

In addition to working as a composer, Kari Beate Tandberg teaches music at upper secondary school, which also includes accompanying on the piano. Over the years she has been active in music organizational life having a number of board- and committee positions for e.q. NKF TONO, UNM, NoTAM, Composers’ Renumeration Fund among others.

On 13 January 2023, she is both a composer and curator at a concert with the Norwegian Radio Symphony Orchestra (KORK), which premieres Dét for double bass and orchestra as well as her orchestral work Fabel.
